Djibouti is strategically located on the north-east coast of Africa, along the region's major trade routes. The country has the status of a free-trade zone and there are no capital controls, making the economy one of the most open and liberal in the region. Djibouti possesses no major natural resources (although gas reserves have been discovered) or a manufacturing base. It is, therefore, heavily reliant on trade and commerce, and on its port, transport and related facilities; the port is a key transhipment, transit and refuelling point. Another leading source of income for Djibouti is the presence of foreign troops.
