As part of our Youth Education Program, EDC provides up to 20 scholarships a year to international business post-secondary students at Canadian universities and colleges, and 7 scholarships to post-secondary students representing the next generation of community champions from a diversity of backgrounds. 

Each scholarship is worth $5,000. Applications are now closed for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Who’s eligible?

To qualify for this scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies (college or undergraduate) at a Canadian college, university, or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following:
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
  • Display passion for international business.

Assets

  • If you’ve studied or had work experience outside of Canada, that’s an asset.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

Who’s eligible?

For Black students pursuing studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep.

To qualify for this scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Be a member of the Black community.
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following:
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
    • A field related to the support of the Black community in Canada or abroad
  • Demonstrate involvement in organizations or causes that are important to the Black community in Canada or abroad.

Assets

  • Be a recipient of honours, awards or recognition.
  • Display involvement in non-profit community, volunteering, and extra curricular activities.
  • Speak multiple languages.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

Who’s eligible? 

For an Indigenous student (First Nations status or non-status, Métis, or Inuit) pursuing studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep.

To qualify for a scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Be a First Nations (status and non-status), Inuit or Métis student.
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following:
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
    • A field related to the support of Indigenous Peoples 
  • Demonstrate commitment to the advancement of Indigenous communities in Canada or abroad through work experience, community support, volunteering, and/or extra-curriculars.

Assets

  • Recipient of awards or honours.
  • If you speak or are pursuing studies of Indigenous language(s), that is considered an asset.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

Who’s eligible? 

For 2SLGBTQI+ students pursuing studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep.

To qualify for a scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Identify as two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, + (2SLGBTQI+)
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following:
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
    • A field related to the support of those who identify as 2SLGBTQI+
  • Demonstrate commitment to the advancement of the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

Assets

  • Schooling or work experience outside of Canada.
  • Demonstration of dedicated leadership, volunteering, and/or extra-curriculars.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

Who’s eligible?

For students with disabilities pursuing studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep.

To qualify for a scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Identify as a person with a disability.
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian college, university or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following: 
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
    • A field related to removing barriers for persons with disabilities, learning about the lived experiences of persons with disabilities, or addressing diversity and inclusion issues, including, but not limited to, the following: inclusive design, youth and children’s studies, social work, disability studies, psychology, human resources, community rehabilitation, community development
  • Demonstrate passion or aspirations for helping persons with disabilities become more connected with their communities and/or creating opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Assets

  • Demonstrate dedicated leadership, volunteering and/or extra-curriculars.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

Who’s eligible? 

For students of Latin American origin or descent pursuing studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep.

To qualify for a scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Be of Latin American origin or descent.
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following:
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
    • A field related to the support of the Latin community in Canada or abroad
  • Demonstrate commitment to the advancement of the Latin+ community in Canada or abroad.

Assets

  • If you’ve studied or had work experience outside of Canada, that’s an asset. 
  • Demonstration of dedicated leadership, volunteering, and/or extra-curriculars.
  • If you speak or are studying a Latin language, that’s an asset.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

Who’s eligible? 

For a student committed to supporting young professionals, pursuing studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep.

To qualify for a scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following:
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
    • A field related to the support of young professionals in Canada or abroad
  • Experience in leading an extracurricular group, club, or activity in your university, college, cégep, or high school.
  • Experience in volunteering, community involvement, sports, and/or case competitions.

Assets

  • Able to speak multiple languages.
  • Schooling or work experience outside of Canada.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

Who’s eligible? 

For Ukrainian students pursuing studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep.

To qualify for a scholarship you must:

  • Be able to provide your SIN (Social Insurance Number) for tax purposes.
  • Be of Ukrainian origin or descent.
  • Have received a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) and/or Expedited Family Sponsorship for Ukrainians.
  • Be pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian college, university, or cégep for the 2024-2025 academic year in a field related to EDC’s work, including one of the following:
    • Business and finance (international business, economics, sustainability, statistics, finance, investments, mathematics) 
    • Operations and administration (operations, commerce, human resources, accounting, communications, project management, information management, data analytics, digital design, graphic design, legal) 
    • Information technology (computer science, software engineering/development, network engineering, business analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity)
    • A field related to the support of Ukrainians in Canada or abroad
  • Demonstrate active involvement in supporting Ukrainian culture.
  • Demonstration of dedicated leadership, volunteering, and/or extra-curriculars.

Assets

  • Schooling or work experience in Ukraine.
  • Have a strong academic standing (minimum 70% cumulative average).

  

How do I apply?

Applications for the 2025/2026 academic year will be open in February 2025. If at that time you would like to apply, here’s how :

Complete the online application in our careers portal, under “Search jobs”. The application process ends in May 2025. Scholarships are awarded in the spring, and issued in the fall at the start of each academic year.

Please note, you must apply electronically: we cannot accept documents by mail, email or fax.

Your application must include:

  • Personal statement/letter of intent (written response of maximum 1000 words or 3-5 minute video/voice clip) - submit a written or video personal introduction to tell us more about yourself, the studies you’re pursuing, your goals and aspirations, your passion for your career, and how receiving this funding would benefit you.
  • Transcripts - your official transcripts from your most recent academic term, including the grading system specific to your school.
  • Your resume or portfolio – include your resume or portfolio (1-3 samples), highlighting any experience abroad (work, study, internship) as well as any professional experience, volunteer work, extracurricular activities or memberships that show your interest for international business.  
  • Reference letter (maximum 1 page) – a signed reference letter from either a professor or instructor at your current educational institution, your employer, mentor/coach, or individual who is not related to you and is familiar with your community involvement, volunteer, or extracurricular activities. Individual providing reference must declare their relationship to the applicant and include contact information. A two minute video/voice clip will be accepted.

To note:

  • EDC employees and their dependents are not eligible.
  • Students cannot receive an EDC scholarship more than once.
  • A student can only apply to -and be considered- for one scholarship in a given year.

Can I apply if I am taking only one international business course?

If you’re in a business or economics program and applying in the international business category, you must show evidence of interest in international business either through your curriculum (courses you’ve taken or plan to take) or your extracurricular activities. If you’re in a combined environment and business program, you do not need to be taking international business courses.

Can I apply if I’m a CEGEP graduate and went straight into the second year of my bachelor’s degree program?

Yes. We recognize that CEGEP and International Baccalaureate graduates sometimes enter bachelor’s degree programs in second year and complete their degree requirements in three years. In this case, you are eligible to apply in your second and third year (i.e., your first and second year at university). If in doubt, contact us!

Can I apply if I’m a college student in a university transfer program?

Yes, you can apply if you’re a college student in the second year of a four-year transfer program that involves two years at college followed by two years at university to obtain a bachelor’s degree and you have already been accepted into the university program.

Can I apply if I’m a college student in a diploma program?

Yes, as long as you meet all other eligibility requirements.

Can I apply if I already have one bachelor’s degree and am now in my second or third year of a second bachelor’s degree program?

Yes, you can apply if your previous degree was in a different area of study.

Can I apply if I’m an international student at a Canadian university?

No, our scholarships program is open only to Canadian students who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

Can I apply if I’m studying international business at university but am currently on a co-op placement?

Yes, you are eligible to apply as long as you meet the other criteria.

Can I apply if I’m in an MBA or other related graduate studies program?

No, EDC doesn’t offer any graduate-level scholarships. You may find something for you at the Government of Canada's international scholarships website.

Can I apply if I’ve already received an EDC international business scholarship?

No, you are only eligible to receive the EDC International Business Scholarship once.

Are extensions ever granted for providing supporting documents?

We must receive your online application, including all supporting documents, on or before the deadline. If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact us regarding an extension for supporting documents.

If my application is successful, when do I receive my scholarship?

If you are awarded an EDC scholarship—congratulations! You’ll receive your funds in the fall once you’ve provided proof of enrollment.

How does the selection committee recognize work experience gained outside of Canada?

Work experience outside of Canada (e.g., a paid/unpaid internship abroad or any type of paid employment overseas within the timeframe of your current degree and for a minimum of three months) is valued by the selection committee. To demonstrate your experience abroad, you must have your foreign employer complete a reference letter.

Are scholarship applicants considered for internships?

Recruitment for internships is a separate function. To be considered for internship opportunities, apply for specific positions posted on EDC's Careers page.
